A year ago our only dog at home, 7, passed away. We named him 7 because his tail looked like the number 7. He has survived many hard times. The worst was when Tawau was hit by an epidemic where many dogs died. 7 was about 3 months old then. He was sick and we called for the vet. The vet gave him an injection but warned us that it might not live for more than 3 days. His back legs were weak after that and could hardly walk. He had to use his front legs to pull himself. He refused to eat and suddenly turned unfriendly towards us. We thought he would die as predicted by the vet. We even thought of how and where to bury him! However, 7 lived on for almost 2 years after that. He got well but his back legs were still weak so much so that he had to run side way. Other than that he was healthy and normal. Some people, no doubts, laughed at him. Once when we came back from holiday, our neighbours told us that 7 foiled a car theft. They thanked us. When we came back from yet another holiday at the end of last May, 7 was excited to see us but he was also very weak. We got him food but he did not eat. We did not suspect anything though, after he has been a tough dog who has survived hard times. The following night we went out for dinner with a friend, Gan Si Wah Roselind. Some how the subject turned to dogs and she told us dog could not take chocolate ( not that it contains any porcine DNA!). We were shocked. Before we left for holiday we actually gave him a left over chocolate cake! 7 did not take the food we got him that night. I searched through the internet and found more about chocolate and dogs. My heart sank. By midnight when I checked on 7 he was lying there almost motionless but his eyes were still opened. They were full of tears when he saw me. My heart really broke into pieces. I was so helpless. I could only tell 7 to go peacefully! Early the next morning 7 was gone. I buried him with tears. I was really sorry. And for friends who have been asking me why all the suddenly I take only vegetables and seafood, this is the main reason. It has been a year. I intend to go on. We are sorry, 7! May its soul rest in peace!
