A year ago today, Hazel said goodbye to her kittens, and came home - TopicsExpress

A year ago today, Hazel said goodbye to her kittens, and came home with me and became HJ. Its hard to believe its been a year already. Shes so different from any cat Ive ever had which has been challenging and great fun at the same time. I have no idea of her history prior to her time raising her kittens on camera and so when I think she shouldnt be afraid of something, or wary of it at least, I wonder what she may have experienced in her past. Perhaps she had no contact with the scary thing and needs only to get used to it, or perhaps she had a bad experience. I hope very much its not the latter. Shes very independent and sometimes I think if she could feed herself shed spend more time by herself. If that were to happen, Id miss her front feet tapping on my legs while I get her breakfast or dinner ready. Theres no doubt she owns me. In fact, shes trained me more than the opposite. Itd take quite awhile to mention all the things shes done in the past year but thinking back I have to say she was such a good sport about all the photographs for the fundraiser last year. There were a few days where I took a few hundred photos just to get one or two I really liked. It took almost 11 months for her to decide sleeping near me was an okay thing to do. She really fooled me with that because the very first thing she did on day 1, once she decided the bedroom was safe, was to jump on the bed, lie down, purr, and close her eyes for a nap while I gently petted her feet. I was so disappointed every night for quite awhile until I decided whatever she wanted to do was fine. It was still months before she discovered she could have a pillow all to herself. The very first 12 can pop box (see photos from last year) is still a favorite to play with although that particular one is smashed flat. I spent at least an hour on the floor with her today playing with one PPB and that box. My job was to keep it at such an angle so the ball would go up when she hit it but not out the other end and then roll back down to her. (Its kind of like an envelope open at both ends. She loves to lie on her side, stick her front feet in there, and feel around. So cute.) Speaking of PPB...who knew that would be the favorite toy?? I never knew a cat could hold a PPB and bunny kick it without it flying away. Such talent! Perhaps her big feet help with that. (Its not a mystery to me where Marvin got his Thunderpaws!) Finally, I celebrated the day by marking all the PPBs I could find with her initials. They will no doubt show up in future photographs. Thanks to all of you who have been so kind with your posts and sharing your own stories over the past year. Im so glad HJ is in my life and that you allow me share her life with you. Happy Adoption Day 1st Anniversary to HJ, Taz, Tybalt, Penelope, and Marvin!! (Im pretty sure all of HJs babies are bigger than she is!) By the way, since we dont know exactly how old HJ is, I decided last year on this day that it is also her birthday. (I think the math works out just right.) So Happy 2nd Birthday to my sweet girl!!
