A year ago today, about this time of night, Dylans backache turned - TopicsExpress

A year ago today, about this time of night, Dylans backache turned into pain so excruciating that I took him to the ER. He had been great all day, we had been at his grandpas memorial where he played Amazing Grace on his saxophone to honor him. We had gone out to dinner later that night and visited with John at his new house. He complained that his back was hurting not long after dinner and it escalated quickly to the point, he was in extreme pain. I took him to the Enumclaw ER because it was the closest to where we were. Jacob was with us and the 20 minute drive to the ER was horrible. Dylan was crying in pain. Every little bump in the road was excruciating for him. Jacob was scared for his brother and kept insisting that we stop and call 911. They got us in as quick as they could, bumped him in front of others so he wouldnt have to wait in such pain. They got him started on morphine fairly quickly after getting him back in a room. About 12:30 am, he was getting a CAT scan. An hour after that, the ER doc was telling me that they found a mass and they were working on getting him a transport to Mary Bridge. He didnt know for sure what it was, but given his past diagnosis, he felt that it was related and that MB would be better able to run tests to give us a definitive diagnosis. I knew then it was a relapse. I was scared to death, but still had hope that it was something simple and easy. He made it to Mary Bridge at almost 4 am and they quickly started tests and giving him platelets. By 10:30, March 31, Easter morning, it was confirmed that Dylan had relapsed. This was a post from that day: March 31, 2013 We just got the word that Dylan has relapsed. I am numb, devastated, heartbroken, lost. Tomorrow they will place a port, do a bone marrow biopsy, do a testicular biopsy and start chemo. They will determine exactly what kind of leukemia and where we need to go from here. Here we are, a year into treatment. It has certainly not been an easy year, but he is still here and that means the world to me. He is still that happy-go-lucky little boy that is Dylan. He continues to smile and enjoy the little things in life in spite of the ups and downs of chemo treatments. He is amazing. Thank you all so much for being a part of our lives this past year. Sharing this has not only helped me close out my day and get ready for the next, but it has given a little voice to the trials and tribulations of the life of a kid with cancer. I hope that it has given some of you the incentive to do something to help with childhood cancer because kids get cancer too! Thank you with all my heart.
