A year ago today our lives took a sharp left turn... but we have some good news! After 2 rounds of chemo, the PET scan shows that the tumor is about 80% inactive from what it was. This was enough for the doctor at Dana Farber to give us the thumbs up to move forward with the stem cell transplant (thankfully his own cells, no need for a donor). This is commonly referred to as a bone marrow transplant because they give him enough chemo at the time to kill all of his bone marrow. His stem cells will act as a reboot to the marrow and his immune system. We will be spending a week as outpatient in Boston this May while they collect his stem cells, and then he will be admitted for three weeks while they administer the chemo, then the stem cells, then wait for him to recover enough to be able to come home. At some point after there will be radiation as well in order to hit it with everything we have and make sure it stays dead. Being able to do 2 rounds of the chemo then start the transplant was the ideal path, so we are pleased to be able to be moving in this direction. Thank you to everyone who has kept us in our thoughts and prayers and to your friends, families and prayer groups as well.
