A year since my heel surgery. Would I have gone ahead with it, if Id known the months of incapacity that would ensue, and the fact that it would still be hurting and preventing me from doing any meaningful running a year later? And that the stress of not understanding what was going on would possibly be the trigger for my mums series of small strokes, resulting in her spending the summer in and out of hospital and ultimately being unable to live independently any longer? I think the answer is that I had no choice. As the surgeon told me, my tendon was the worst hed seen in his 30-year career. It had, he said, the texture of wet blotting paper. If I hadnt booked myself in for the surgery, it would undoubtedly have ruptured at some point soon, and then the damage would have been even worse. I would have ended up in A&E, and would have had emergency surgery from whoever was available, rather than an expert in the field. It was the right decision. Ive got rid of the lump of bone that was responsible for my troubles, and once weve worked out how to correct the gait imbalances it left me with, I should hopefully be able to eliminate the remaining pain. And my mum is better off living in a home, with 24/7 support and companionship - she would have had to take that step before too long, anyway. All is good...
