A young mother whose toddler was just diagnosed with autism called me today; I did not know her, but the panic in her voice was apparant. A friend of mine told her to call. I remember in addiitonal to his medical issues the doctors telling us Hunter has a form of autism. My choice was to accept the privilege that God gave me to parent this child. I let Hunter experience everything; even when I want to be that helicopter parent and protect him from all harm. Believe me we have had meltdowns, and tantrums and somewhat normal days. I am embrace his autism. The moments he lets me in and see his world. I know I am lucky. It was not always like that, we still look for a safe quiet place when visiting houses (although may not be evident to host) Hunter will go there and get his space, adjust his thoughts; I recall the doctors advising us to keep him home, I did the opposite---I took him everywhere. He did not talk and did not walk well into 5 years old. We never stopped encouraging him. I do not know what the future holds but I am glad I am on this ride and will continue support every endeavor and foster his spirit. So to this young mom, embrace the privilege, foster the spirit, adjust your expectations but keep them high--that is all we want for any of our kids.
