A youtube compilation video of guilty dogs. Not so hilarious! Dogs dont feel guilt. Guilt is a uniquely human emotion, no matter how convinced you are of the dogs contrite expressions and postures. What we see on this video are many examples of classical conditioning. Each of these dogs has learned to associate a threatening (aversive) interaction with the owners tone of voice, being shown an item, possibly even the video camera. Dogs with no such experience will be happy-go-lucky when shown a book they chewed. Dogs *with* such experience will look guilty when shown anything in that way, including intact shoes, items a different dog might have chewed, or someone elses urine puddle. This has absolutely no effect on the next opportunity to chew/urinate. The images and behaviors are excellent examples of appeasement or calming signals (rolling over, tongue-flicking, looking away, head/body down) as these dogs are screaming (through body language) that they want to avoid injury. Finally, at least some of these cornered dogs will end up biting, and then be blamed for the unprovoked attack. Very informative
