AAG SEPTEMBER PROGRAM The Aiken Artist Guild’s September meeting with feature a presentation by sculpture Tom Supensky entitled, “The Birth of an Exhibition: The Job of the Curator”. The meeting will be held September 9, in the Brown Pavilion Room of the Aiken Center for the Arts beginning at 7:00 pm. The public is welcome to attend. Tom Supensky is Professor Emeritus at Towson University in Towson, Maryland, where he taught for over 35 years. During his tenure he taught on Fulbright exchanges in Bristol, England and Oldenburg, Germany. He has also taught in Florence, Italy and Tasmania, Australia. After retiring in 2003 he moved to Aiken, SC with his wife, Pauline. His work has been exhibited in Korea, England, Germany, Italy, Australia, and throughout the US. Currently Tom is working to curate an exhibition of 43 noted ceramic artists, all over the age of 70, for the National Council for the Ceramic Arts conference to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in March of 2014. He will also be exhibiting his work at the Aiken Center for the Arts in 2014. “My clay sculptures are hand built in a vitreous earthenware, basically using the coil method of construction. I keep the technique and materials as simple as possible and focus my attention on content and aesthetics. My work comes directly from personal life experiences and world events. “The artist’s work uses tones of humor that assist in getting more serious thoughts across to the viewer. Tom has authored a both entitled “Looking at Art Philosophically” intended for anyone contemplating entering the arts as a career or hobby.
