AAP vs Media: Everybody seem to be beating around the bush! One - TopicsExpress

AAP vs Media: Everybody seem to be beating around the bush! One of the main question which is missing in the whole debate on AAP Vs Media, or should we say “Paid Media” debate is this. Is the Indian media model economically self-sustainable? Or was the Indian media ever been economically self-sustained model historically? If not, who paid the necessary capital and running costs to run the Indian media all these years? For what purpose they paid that money? What was the “returns” they got from their investment into the media? More important question should be is the 24-hours news channels in India made any profit so for in India? If none of the 24-hour news channels in India made enough profit to sustain them economically, how are they running so far? Will the Indian (news) consumers pay increased charges to make these news channels self-sustained? Will Indian journalists (particularly TV anchors) ready to take a big cut in their fat salaries to make these channels self-sustainable, so that these channels can run “independently” without any kind of unnecessary “outside” (advertisers, corporates, politicians, governments) pressure on them? When Indian news consumer want “free” news and Indian journalists (including this one) want big fat salaries where from the necessary money come from? Who will fund the Indian media? As the oft repeated quote, there are no free lunches anywhere in the world and that applies to Indian media more in this context. Once up on a time, there used to be a word: “cover culture” among media in Tamil Nadu. Which means (black) money will be paid in sealed covers to those journos who attend press meets. Now that (black) money has become part and parcel of our salary covers (more so in 24-hours news channels). It’s no more in the fringes; it’s the mainstream. AAP and Kejriwal may have their own vested interests to target Indian media at this point of time, but let us not pretend we didn’t know anything about the rot we all live in. That will be the biggest lie; which none of us (in Indian media) can cover up even with all our professional skills put together!
