AAPA Joins Round Table on Preventing COPD Readmissions National Association for Medical Direction of Respiratory Care (NAMDRC) recently hosted a round-table discussion in Washington, D.C., to address the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) plan to instate policies addressing all cause readmissions tied to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) discharges. Under the CMS Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program, hospitals with excess readmission rates, including COPD patients, are penalized with reduced Medicare payments. Charlene M. Morris, MPAS, PA-C, DFAAPA, president of the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants, represented AAPA at the meeting. Morris brought 34 years of experience in family medicine to the discussion, including her expertise in preventive medicine and COPD care. During the round table, key pulmonary-related societies and other interested stakeholders made an effort to create consensus on best practices for preventing COPD readmission.
