AB Arts Published on Jan 10, 2015 HUGO MEDRANO in El beso de la mujer araña (short monologue in Spanish, 1994) GALA Theatre Co-founder and Producing Artistic Director Hugo Medrano received the 1994 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Resident Play for his role in Kiss of the Spider Woman. This play, is based on a novel by the Argentine writer Manuel Puig, whom I met in Paris through a mutual friend, cinematographer Nestor Almendros. I met and worked with Hugo Medrano since the early 1970s in several artistic projects and once he received the Helen Hayes Award, I asked him to film a short monologue to test my new VHS camera. It was taped backstage at the GALA Theatre using and improvised set with what I found available there. The crew was Hugo and myself.
