ABABU IS RIGHT We have read in the newspapers that there is a rift between Ababu Namwamba and Raila Odinga. In my view, that is baseless because the political fame he is enjoying is as a result of Raila’s effort. Therefore, I do not think Ababu could be naive not to recognize that fact. However, it must be appreciated he is not immortal. He has feelings and emotions of a human being and could react to issues. What cannot be hidden is that he is a politician who always would wish to be one step ahead of others and no one can snatch that virtue from him. It should also not be forgotten that on 9/12/2013, I wrote an open letter to Raila advising him to prevail upon the two camps in ODM, one led by Ababu Namwamba and another by Agnes Zani to the effect that they should lower their tempers and agree to postpone the said party elections scheduled for February 2014 until structures of the party were put in order to allow audit in all branches across the country to ascertain whether they physically keep voter registers, know how many offices there are in each county, number of staff serving in those offices, assets such as computers, vehicles ,furniture and cash are solidly intact since the party used very little money on campaigns and could not explain where the other money and assets belonging to the party went. It is also not clear who pays rent for the ODM offices since no one pays rent for the offices in the countryside except the Nairobi offices. Had my idea been adhered to, the current happenings would be avoided since we could have decentralized the operations of the party from the headquarters to the local level to enhance the recruitment of members and proper record keeping. What this implies is that the party was required to recruit additional staff for the offices opened at the county level. If this was done, it would be easier to carry out free and fair elections since the prerequisite data would be available to enable candidates taking part in the elections to know the genuine ODM voters registered for instance, in Mombasa, Vihiga, Kakamega, Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii, Machakos, Garrisa, Kitui, Kajiado, etc. It is unfortunate that seven months down the line since I gave this advice to the ODM management, nothing has happened. Things are still the way they were in February 2014. From this analysis, I think Ababu Namwamba is right to complain why elections could not be held as per the party rules as well as political parties act which by law require them to be held in all political parties to enable the government to know the bonafide officials in those political parties. Therefore, for Oburu Odinga to openly call Ababu a jubilee coalition mole from within is obfuscating and covert obliteration to deter his ambitions and desires of becoming the secretary general of the party as well the key point man in the Luhya politics. Ababu is a pragmatic intelligent politician who could not allow his conscience to succumb to the politics of flattery and telling fantasies to the party leader. Hence, to disparage such an enormous youthful leader full of energy and wisdom by dispassionate and pathological leaders like Oburu Odinga is to destroy the symbiotic relationship that has long existed between him and Raila Odinga. In conclusion, I wish to call upon Raila, Kalonzo and Wetangula to declare who amongst them should carry CORD’s flag in the 2017 general elections. They should also openly tell Kenyans the formula they would use in arriving at the decision. If none of them is overtly willing to declare his stand, nobody should attempt to stop Ababu from actualizing his dreams of ‘Yes, I can’.
