ABCA-North Sound, Antigua, May 30, 2014- A recent decision handed down by an independent committee headed by Justice Moe has resulted in a change in the points standings of the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association (ABCA) 2-Day League, going into the final round of matches to be played this weekend, May 31 to June 1. The ruling,, awarded four points each to PIC Liberta and United Insurance Combined School, following an appeal by Liberta Sports Club to an ABCA Cricket Committee DECISION to award full points to Combined Schools, after a pitch preparation and weather hit match between both team was not played. The Moe committee decision, handed down to the ABCA on Thursday, May 29, means that Liberta move to 56 points, taking the lead from Combined Schools, who drop to fourth position on 45 points. Currently, the contest remains intriguingly poised, with nine points separating the top three teams. Any of leaders PIC Liberta (56 points), second placed Medpath New Winthropes (48 points) and Diamond International Police (47 Points), can take the title. In the final round of matches, an outright win for defending champions Liberta against Police could see Liberta retaining the title with a maximum of 68 points. Liberta can still win if they earn first innings points and move to 62 points. However, an outright win for Police could end Liberta’s reign; since the lawmen can reach a maximum 59 points. However, New Withropes, the other team with a realistic chance of winning will need an outright win when they play 7th place All Saints (22 points). A win will put New Winthropes on 60 points; but they would need The Police to defeat Liberta outright or gain first innings over Liberta, for New Winthropes to have a chance at the title. The following are the point standings going into the eighth and final round of matches. Points Standings for the ABCA 2-day Championship as at May 30, 2014 PIC Insurance Liberta 56 Medpath New Winthropes 48 Diamond International Police 47 United Insurance Combined Schools 45 Caribbean Union Bank Bethesda 43 Scotia Bank Empire 31 All Saints 22 Bolans 19 Jennings 14 Matches slated for May 31 to June 1 are: Police vs. Liberta; Schools vs. Bethesda; New Winthropes vs. All Saints; Jennings vs. Bolans. Scotia Bank Empire have completed their quota of matches.
