ABOUT LAST NIGHT... Im not a baseball fan, but Im married to one. A lifelong Cards fan, in fact. I like going to the ball park, though, and when we lived in St. Louis during the 90s, most of my summer weekends were spent at Busch Stadium. And since moving to New England, weve been to a few Red Sox games. So while I like both teams, Ive been following this years series with about as much interest as, say, the falling of the leaves or the appearance of wooly worms. So I was already in bed, with a dog curled up against me, when, shortly after midnight, I heard my beloved spouse of 26 years completely lose her mind. I heard enough from downstairs to figure out that the Cards had beat the Sox in Game Three because of some sort of strange event. The dog and I considered hiding under the bed, but decided that we probably werent in mortal danger and went back to sleep. This morning, I read the N.Y. Times story of the game and its strange outcome ... and now Im becoming a bit more interested. This is a genuinely weird story. And given the fact that this is the second game of the series that the Cards have won because the Sox made a critical error, even a non-fan like myself cant help but pay attention. When the ball game is on, I usually curl up in bed with a good book (currently reading SOME OF YOUR BLOOD by Theodore Sturgeon, a classic horror novel). Tonight, I think Ill watch Game Four instead. This series is getting Halloween spooky, indeed.
