ABOUT MY HOMETOWN (preface to a book I was writing about Pineville) The first golden rays of morning sunshine beam through the shadowed branches of the trees in my backyard, gently kissing the newly-mowed lawn that gleams in dewy ecstasy as it awakens to the new day. In the majestic silence, I sit in an old high-back rocking chair, a cup of coffee warming my soul as I think of how blessed I am to be alive - and of the days that have brought me to this point; the days of old, the days of sweet, simple, hometown living - the days of Pineville, North Carolina. Im older now - a lot of waters gone under the bridge since those days - but a part of that time is deeply embedded in my heart and will never leave me. Memories of bygone times have etched themselves into my mind, and, with every thought of them, my spirit reaches to heaven and thanks God for the blessing of being raised in this little town - and at a time when things were so much simpler, so much happier. I still hear the laughter of little children as they ran out the doors of the old elementary school when the last bell rang; the wonder of exploring the woods just beyond the pasture behind our house; the aroma of Mr. Hairs old stogie as we piled into the drug store, our feet shuffling along the hardwood floor, and settled into the booth with our fountain drinks. Soon, the memories begin to flood my entire body - and, as a warm smile begins to widen on my face, I feel goosebumps - and a tear coming to my eye. This wasnt just a small town to us - it was Heaven ...
