ABOUT SWEERS ISLAND, a Dutch Discovery, 1642. That island, off the North Australian coast, was first sighted by Abel Tasman of (photo) Lutjegast, Groningen (here with daughter Claesgen and wife Jannetje, whom he married in the Oude Kerk, Dec. 1631, Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp). However, the next one to visit the island was Salomon Sweers, at one time Bailiff of Texel and extraordinaris Councillor of the Dutch East Indies, now burried in the Adam Oude Kerk, grave 388 (1674); picture of his Nijmegen parents, Arent & Aeltje. Sweers, a member of the naval family, finally attached his name to this beautiful fishing island. Abel, of course, already had a larger island to his name.. Why not join this Sweers Family and have a comfortable coffee at the Koffieschenkerij De Oude Kerk - close to that TASMAN Wedding Chamber.. Or rather. why not join the Organ Benefit Dinner evening on 13 September, in final aid of the City Organ restoration!
