ABR Video Update-May 23, 2014- Playing to Grow The cubs were playful today. They’re very quiet when they wrestle; in the wild, noise attracts attention and cubs are safest when they’re not noticed. Play prepares them for the future; one day sparing and wrestling will be serious business, but for now, they’re having fun. Curator Coy reports-I spotted the cubs near center of the Wild Enclosure from the observation tower. Two of the cubs were engaged in silent play fighting; no aggression involved, they were playing socially. Play leads to the development of skills they will need in the future, such as fighting. The other cubs were near the left-most culvert den. I walked down to peer through the small opening in the blind near this culvert den. One of the cubs climbed on top of the culvert den and chewed on leaves. Within minutes, this cub came down to engage in play with a nearby cub. The same cub went and engaged in play with another cub. Eventually, all four cubs were in this same area of the Wild Enclosure. As I was taking pictures through opening, I heard Bucky sniffing very loudly and approaching fencing near me. The camera was in video mode and pointed downward. Bucky was sniffing vigorously and rolling in the grass just under where I was peering through blind. I placed my hand (wearing black gloves) over the open areas in the blind around the camera lens to ensure that the cubs could not see me. As I slowly stood up to leave, Bucky made a loud snorting sound, and all four of the cubs ran toward the vegetation. One of the cubs paused and looked around cautiously. I left the bear area. appalachianbearrescue.org/campaigns_abr.htm https://youtube/watch?v=64Q6ircz3Bk&feature=youtu.be
