ABSOLUTELY!! This is exactly what Ive been saying for YEARS... I hear all these complaints about how its hard to find good employees or how people have NO loyalty to the company they work for. In my generation, why WOULD we have any loyalty or desire to do better? If I work 60 hours per week and work HARD during those hours, I might make an extra $200 (if Im lucky at most jobs to even GET that many hours) but during those 60 hours of hard work and dedication, I made the company exponentially more than what they paid me. Meanwhile, I am tired, probably ornery, didnt see my family, feel under appreciated at work AND at home, etc... then, right as I reach retirement or really start to gain any sort of seniority at work, they lay me off to save costs while their upper tier gets raises that FAR overshadow my measly salary. Then they overwork the people who are lucky to keep their jobs. My favorite part of the article is when one company set an amount of work that an employee had to accomplish in a day then they were allowed to leave (presuming with full 40 hour pay?) If I can accomplish what is required of me in 6 hours versus 8 hours, I will work harder and be more dedicated to my tasks. I promise you! Instead, companies choose to make me stay for the extra two hours while I find reasons to look busy. I am more apt to do NOTHING during those two hours than I am to find more work to do. BUT, if I am allowed to leave after accomplishing my list of stuff, I am MORE likely to feel a sense of what can I do to help out? before I leave - maybe even staying past my 6 hours just to help out a co-worker or to accomplish a bit more work. Or I might work 10 hours to get thursdays work done too and then get to leave work after 2 hours on thursday so I can have, effectively, another day off with my family. I know this scheduling doesnt work in all industries (cashiering or waitressing or whatnot), but those industries could be addressed with other creative innovations to help improve work. Lets start with trusting me to be able to delete an item I accidentally scanned twice while cashiering without having to call for - AND WAIT FOR - a manager to get over to my register to override the accidental second item. A little trust people?? Do you think in the time I am waiting for a manager to come over that I am providing good customer service? How was your shopping experience? and thank you for shopping with us... NO WAY. Trust me, in the time it takes a manager to come over to my register (sometimes 5+ minutes), the customer is complaining about the stupid procedure - and I am agreeing with him/her openly and honestly. It doesnt make your company look good to not trust its employees with simple tasks that would make their job smoother and easier. YOU HIRED ME TO DO WHATEVER MY JOB IS - SO LET ME DO MY DAMNED JOB THE BEST WAY I CAN!! LET ME SHOW YOU WHY YOU HIRED ME. LET ME SHOW YOU MY STRENGTHS. RECOGNIZE MY STRENGTHS AND MY WEAKNESSES AND **USE** THEM. OK, RANT OVER....for now...
