ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to study the effects of assertive behaviors training program on disadvantaged children’s anxiety and self-esteem. The design of this study was an experimental research design. Seventeen disadvantaged boys, aged between twelve to fifteen, living at Chiang Mai child welfare institute, participated in this study. Eight participants were assigned to the experimental group and nine were assigned to the control group. The experimental group participated in five sessions that met twice a week for three hours per sessions of assertive behaviors training program. The instruments used were the Assertive Behaviors Training Program, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Form Y) and the Coopersmith Self- Esteem Inventory (School Form). Data was collected before and after the experiment and was analyzed by using t-test and ANCOVA. The results were as follows: 1. The mean scores of state-trait anxiety of the experimental disadvantaged children after the experiment were statistically significantly lower than the scores before the experiment. The mean scores of self-esteem after the experiment were statistically significantly higher than the scores before the experiment (p < .05). 2. The mean scores of state anxiety of the experimental disadvantaged children after the experiment were statistically significantly lower than the scores of the control disadvantaged children (p < .05), but the mean scores of trait anxiety and self-esteem between the experimental disadvantaged children and the control disadvantaged children after experiment were not statistically significant.
