ACCUWEATHER FORECAST FOR WINTER STORM VULCAN 3.11.2014 #2 Generally dry and mild conditions will occur across the state today. Places in the south central and some of the eastern part of the state will rise into 60s for high temperatures making this the warmest day of the year so far. Then, a storm system will begin to move into the state tonight into early Wednesday morning. Rain will form across the southwest and into the northeast, while rain across the northwest and north central will change over to mostly snow by sunrise on Wednesday. Rain will move into the eastern part of the state by later in the morning on Wednesday. Winds will increase throughout the day on Wednesday with most places by late in the afternoon gusting to near or over 40 mph. Thunderstorms will form across the southeast and these can bring brief and damaging wind gusts over 40 mph Wednesday evening. All snow, which can be heavy will fall across the northwest and can accumulate up to a foot in a few spots. The rain will change to and end as snow late Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night for the southwest, south central and northeast. An inch to a few inches can be expected in these areas when all is said and done by later Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. More importantly in southwestern, central and eastern parts of the state, a rapid freeze up will occur on roadways when temperatures turn sharply colder and below freezing Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning from west to east. This will cause slick spots on paved surfaces. High pressure will move in from the west behind this storm during the remainder of Thursday ushering in much colder and windy conditions. Friday will be dry and not as cold across the state. Another feature will move across the state on Saturday causing a rain shower chance in many places. Sunday will become largely dry across the state. In the long range, winter is not over and we will have to watch another cold system next Monday into Tuesday (17th-18th). A storm may cut to the south of the state between the 17th and 18th and can produce more snow or mixed precipitation for the state. One trend takes the system well south of the state, but even this solution would produce some snow showers during that period which can lead to slippery roads. A weaker disturbance will move through state on the 19th with either rain or snow showers. This will move quickly through the area with just a small accumulation. There can be a warmer system, a storm cutting farther west and north of the state leading to a greater chance for rain rather than snow around the 23rd or 24th. Wm.
