ACI NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2013 from the chairman The arts are thriving in Canterbury at present, and Arts Canterbury is glad to be playing an active part in this. The Arts Guide is being well received, and bringing our members to the attention of a growing public. Exhibitions and our other projects attest to the enterprise of our executive, and our willingness to work in promoting the arts and artists of Canterbury. We are moving into Annual General Meeting time and the reorganising of the executive. Our constitutional requirement for the executive is to meet “at least four times every year”. We make these meetings interesting as well as productive. See the section on Executive and Support below. Arts Canterbury is a charitable organisation that depends on the voluntary input of its members. With a membership of about 170, we are the strongest we have ever been, which also means busiest. the art of canterbury ART GUIDE BOOK Distribution of the art of Canterbury 2013 has gone well, and there are now about 1000 left from the printing run of 5000 copies now spread all over Canterbury. Copies are being rationed out to contributing galleries and artists, libraries and information centres who request more copies. So we urge member galleries and artists who want more copies before we run out to contact the ACI administrator soon. Because feedback is enthusiastic, the Executive has started planning the art of Canterbury 2014. Interest has grown since publication of the 2013 Guide, and a number of artists and galleries have joined Arts Canterbury in anticipation of a 2014 issue. As there is a limit on the number of pages, those who are on the Arts Canterbury website at the start of the new year will have priority for the 2014 issue. More details on the art of Canterbury 2014 will shortly be sent to members. Keep your eye on the website for ongoing information. annual general meeting Annual General Meetings may not be the most popular pastimes for artists, but they are necessary to keep an organisation such as ours alive and well. They can also be fun; and this year we are making a special effort to ensure that you will not only profit from the AGM, but will also enjoy it. Please note the time and place – Friday, 15 November at 6 pm. We know that this is Show Day in Christchurch, but consider that it should appeal to many from in and out of Christchurch. The place is the Quality Elms Hotel, 456 Papanui Road opposite the Art Metro Gallery and Café. The meeting itself will be relatively short, and we hope that you will join members of the executive for dinner at the restaurant (own cost, sorry) afterwards. executive and support Members frequently ask how they can help with our various activities. At the time we say thank you; but often forget to ask you when next we are organising something. And you often don’t get round to reminding us. So the executive has decided to set up a supporters’ group. Within the next few weeks we will send you details of this, together with an invitation to join it. One of the main tasks of an AGM is to elect an executive committee. At our most recent executive meeting we agreed that some people are policy makers and others are doers. Those in the supporters’ group will be doers, while the executive will continue to be policy makers. Of course, some rare people are both. When you receive the formal notice of the AGM, please consider how you can help; whether to offer yourself for the executive, or go on the list of supporters – or both. membership and the website A reminder that the membership year is now the calendar year. By mid-November, soon after the 2013 Annual General Meeting, you will receive an invoice for your 2014 membership. For those with current entries on the website – and inclusion in the art of Canterbury 2014 – this will include your website entry fee. Please note that there are two categories of website listing – art trail and profiled – and you can change your current category for the new year. Any members who joined since July will be able to carry over their memberships and website fees to the end of 2014 for no extra charge. give art a go Give art a go has proved a rewarding project for children in the Linwood area of Christchurch. Funded by Creative Communities, Christchurch, up to thirty children enjoyed learning a variety of new skills provided by Arts Canterbury tutors Vivienne Bashford, Ross Gillies, Cynthia Muir, Maxine Burney, Jacky Moren and Dennis Rowe. There was to have been a final series in November, but Linwood Intermediate School, where the classes were held, is one of the schools to be closed at the end of the year. So the school decided that life should be kept as steady and normal as possible for the children to adjust to such a big change. our members congratulations to: Ruth Reid For completing her own challenge of 100 paintings in 100 days Note: These are on exhibition at 158A Marine Parade, New Brighton, Christchurch, 9 to 30 November, 10am to 4pm daily.
