ACQUIRE MODERN MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, HOSPITALS URGED Local medical institutions have been challenged to invest in modern medical equipment and technology to attract back specialists who left the country in search of greener pastures. Though Zimbabwe produces medical practitioners who are amongst the best trained in Africa and beyond, most of them shun working locally due to lack of good remuneration and advanced medical facilities that enable them to provide world class medical care. This emerged at the official hand over of a state-of-the-art causality department at Gweru Central Hospital. The casualty ward was constructed and equipped by Unki Mines at a cost of US$1 million. Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa who acknowledged that local medical experts are competent enough to match international standards, however, challenged medical institutions to create conducive working environments to lure back others who have left. Former Governor and Resident Minister for Midlands province, Cde Cephas Msipa, who was recently admitted at one of the country’s hospitals, said some people have travelled to neighbouring countries and beyond for medical excellence yet the country has highly qualified medical practitioners. Dr Parirenyatwa toured the state-of-the-art facilities that include the renal unit, laundry room before he cut the ribbon officially opening the new out patients department. Gweru hospital due to its central location is usually inundated with emergency referrals resulting from road accidents. Before the construction of the new casualty ward, the hospital was using a small room which could only accommodate two patients at a time. -ZBC
