ACROSS THE POND: Thats What I Like--Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers (1989) ... While Janet Jackson was dancing at the top of the American charts with Miss You Much, the No. 1 song in England 25 years ago today was, well, different. Led by club disc jockey Les Hemstock, the father-son mixing team of John and Andy Pickles and another club DJ, Ian Morgan, the conglomerate from Yorkshire, England known as Jive Bunny & The Mixmasters stormed to the top of the British charts three times within a year between the summer of 1989 and summer of 90 with Thats What I Like being the middle chart-topper, spending three weeks there, the follow-up to the monster smash Swing The Mood. Like Swing The Mood, the lads took golden oldies from the 1950s and 60s and combined them into one happy dance medley, while stringing an instrumental together at the start. In this case, the song that gets this medley going is the famous Hawaii 5-0 theme song. The Bunny would score eight Top 40 hits in his native country, five of which were Top 10 hits. Among the songs sampled or re-recorded for this medley include Lets Twist Again, Lets Dance (by Chris Montez) and Runaround Sue. While Swing The Mood went Top 15 in the U.S., Thats What I Like only got to No. 69. Enjoy!
