ACT land managers and volunteers treated patches of Cogongrass in Santa Fe River Preserve today. What is Cogongrass? Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica) is an aggressive invader of natural and disturbed areas throughout the Southeast. Native to Southeast Asia, it was accidently introduced into the southeast United States in packing material in the early 1900s. It was also intentionally introduced for erosion control and livestock forage. A pest in 73 countries, and considered to be one of the Top 10 Worst Weeds in the World, cogon grass affects pine productivity and survival, wildlife habitat, recreation, native plants, fire behavior, site management costs and more.
