ACTING FOR BEGINNERS AND AGE I struggle to respond to people - TopicsExpress

ACTING FOR BEGINNERS AND AGE I struggle to respond to people who inbox me, or send me messages, saying that they would like to become actors and they are over the age of 30. Of course the first and obvious question is; Where have you been and what have you been doing? The fact of the matter is that 30 is a bit of stretch to start any career. A 30year old someone should be thinking of settling down with a family, and the assumption is that the person is also settled with some kind of a job or a career. Hard facts, but true. It is a bit hard to explain to a person that this industry expects you to be articulate in your craft at the age of 30 and that it would be hard to cast a 35year old first time actor in most of the roles that require someone of that age unless they have been in the industry for a while... If you enter the industry at that age, the only thing I can personally think of is being an extra, and that is not very encouraging, for a person who is not young and entering the industry for the first time. Acting looks easy when you watch soapies and movies and actors who are good at what they do. It then inspires a feeling among the viewers that they too can do this, and yet it is not easy. Acting is skill mixed with talent and mixed with hard work. It is something that by the time you enter your 30s you should have been doing for at least the past 10years... And by that time you should be mastering the craft, because you should be at the stage where you are being considered for Leading man or Leading woman roles... Not quite something that someone just entering the industry can or could do... The reason therefore why I struggle with responding to such messages is that at the bottom of my heart the real answer I usually want to give is that at 30 it is too late to enter the industry, and mind you, some people say they are 35 and others are 40 and it just breaks my heart to see someone wanting to be an actor for the first time at the age of 40. The truth of the matter is that for most, the train would have left the station. I am sure that there are some exceptions out there, but they are quite few and far in between.
