ACTION OPPORTUNITY If you chose to comment, keep in mind that BLM Manages over 245 million surface acres out west, and its managed as a multi-use model. However, of those acres-- 54 million have been set aside to be managed for wild horses and burros, the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act mandates that these lands are to be managed .... principally but not necessarily exclusively for the welfare of the animals. That means, they are to be managed as PRIORITY on the lands set aside in the 1971 Act written to protect them, and signed into law. Interesting to note, however, that our wild horses and burros are now being managed on only approximately (conservatively) 34 million-- 20 million less, but with well over 50,000 mustangs captured and in Federal holding facilities out east on tax payer dime. The bigger picture... and why I do what I do. Per American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is revamping its land use planning process, specifically the way it develops Resource Management Plans (RMPs), and is seeking public comments. RMPs are foundational to the way the BLM manages our public lands, establishing its land use policies for periods of 10-20 years, sometimes longer. It is through the RMP process that critical decisions regarding wild horses and burros -- including the number that will be allowed to live on the land -- are made. Over the past four decades, the BLM has used this process against mustangs, taking away nearly 20 million acres of designated habitat and establishing artificially low allowable population levels, despite public comments and scientific recommendations that strongly oppose these actions. Now is the time to weigh in strongly to tell the BLM that it must meaningfully consider public input, and improve the transparency and scientific basis of all land use decisions, including those affecting wild horses and burros - especially since once an RMP is established, its policies can remain in force for decades. act.wildhorsepreservation.org/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=17621
