ACTIVITIES INSIDE THE RED CHAMBER AS SENATE MOURNS DEAD IMMIGRATION SERVICE APPLICANTS Irked by the tragedy that befell the nation last Saturday in which some applicants for employment with the Nigeria Immigration Service lost their lives at some of the aptitude test centres, a motion of urgent national importance was moved by Sen. Abubakar Atiku and debated on the floor of the Senate. The motion was entitled, ‘Nigerian Immigration Service Nationwide Aptitude Test and Physical Examination of March 15, 2014’. The motion ultimately sailed through into a Resolution of the Senate: (1). The Senate should condole with the families of those who lost their lives and sympathize with those injured. (2). Observed a minute silence in honour of those who lost their lives (3). Directed its Committee on Interior to conduct an Investigative Public Hearing on the matter and report back in two weeks. During the debate on the motion, Sen. Adamu Gumba said the deaths recorded could have been averted if the right decisions were taken in the first instance. He stressed that the exercise was wrongly planned and executed, describing it as pathetic and an unfortunate national tragedy. Speaking in the same vain, Sen. Bernabas Gemade submitted that an incompetent consultant was contracted by the Ministry of Interior to undertake the recruitment exercise on its behalf. He added that the consultant should be penalized and prosecuted for the deaths of innocent Nigerians. Sen. Gbenga Obadara described the NIS incident as a national tragedy. He lamented that unemployment was killing Nigeria as a country. Sen. Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan observed that the nation’s economy is not working properly because there is no food on the table for majority of Nigerians. He averred that the tragic incident that resulted in the loss of lives could be avoided if the country has a credible process of recruitment. Report from the Media Office of Senator Alhaji Sefiu Adegbenga Kaka.
