ACTS - Chapter 16 - King James Version Modernized. Then he came to Derbe and Lystra: And, behold, there was a certain disciple named Timothy, the son of a certain woman, who was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: Who was well testified of by the brothers that were at Lystra and Iconium. Paul would have him to go forth with him; and took him and had him circumcised because of the Jews that were in those places: for they all knew that his father was a Greek. And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them the laws to keep, that were decided of the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem. And so were the churches established in the faith, and daily increased in number. But when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were prevented of the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia, after they came to Mysia, they endeavored to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit did not permit them. And passing by Mysiam they came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was standing a man of Macedonia, and invoked him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, inferring that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel to them. Therefore sailing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; and from there to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: And we remain in that city some days. And on the sabbath day we went out of the city by a riverside, where it was accustomed for prayer to be made; and we sat down, and spoke to the women that convened there. And a certain woman named Lydia, a trader of purple cloth, of the city of Thyatira, who worshipped God, heard us: Whose heart the Lord opened, that she paid attention to the things which were spoken of Paul. And when she was baptized, and her fanily, she invoked us saying, If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and stay. And she compelled us. And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain girl possessed with a spirit of divination encountered us, which brought her lords much gain by divination: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which proclaim to us the way of salvation. And she did this for many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command you in the Name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. And when her lords saw that the hope of their profits was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drag them into the marketplace to the rulers, and brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, and teach customs, that are not right for us to accept, neither to do, being Romans. And the multitude stood up together against them: And the magistrates tore off their clothes, and ordered to beat them. And when they had imposed many strokes upon them, they threw them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, threw them into the inner prison, and secured their feet fast in the stocks. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises to God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: And immediately all the doors were opened, and every ones bands were loosed. And the keeper of the prison waking up out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do not harm yourself; for we are all here. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, and your house. And they spoke to him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their wounds; and was baptized instantly, he and all of his. And when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house. And when it was day, the magistrates sent the constables, saying, Let those men go. And the keeper of the prison told Paul these words, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace. But Paul said to them, They have beaten us publicly without a trial, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now they want to put us out privately? It is not reasonable; but let them themselves come and take us out. And the constabless said these words to the magistrates: And they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. And they came and implored them, and brought them out, and requested them to leave the city. And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: And when they had seen the brothers, they comforted them, and departed (Acts 16:1-40; KJVM). Amen.
