ADIEU, COMRADE FESTUS IYAYI I don’t know how you are feeling where you are but I know if your transition leaves your personality intact, then you might have been thinking we might have betrayed you. No. we wouldn’t have done that even in military junta era. We believe Nigeria could be better run than these opportunists are doing. We believe in democracy. We believe in the rule of law. We won’t be intimidated by the people who know little of the value of education. We cannot be cowed by them though we know they have no respect for human lives. We have the reponsibility to lecture them that knowledge is power and not gun nor position. We must educate them, there is no ruler without the ruled, no leader without the followers. I don’t know if you heard they had sacked us on the 4th of December, the day your burrial rites begin. Yes they changed the date because they realised they were confused in the first place but they don’t want to let go of their ego. So they had posponed the sack of all academics to the 9th, a day after we would have paid our last respect to you. Festus, Jingo cannot contain it still. He cannot understand what happened till date. I know he will definitely fight on till the oppressors of the masses are humiliated. Prof, Nigerians appreciate your struggles all these days, though we always show it after people like you might have departed this plannet. Comrade you had paid the ultimate price for the emancipation of the down trodden. Posterity will not forget, but they, after they might have left their office will only be remembered for the evil they have done to the poor people of you beloved country. We love this country more than they do. We love our students more than they may immagine. We love the system more than they think. We shall fight on because it is a worthy course. The pen has always prevailed against the sword. Adieu our amiable comrade, Prof Festus Iyayi; former president of ASUU! Your name goes down as one of the matyrs of freedom.
