ADMIN HARIS Ibn Taymiyyah was asked which is better: the first ten days of Dhul-Ḥijjah or the last ten nights of Ramaḍān? He answered by saying, “The first ten days of Dhul-Ḥijjah are better than the last ten days of Ramaḍān, but the last ten nights of Ramaḍān are better than the first ten days of Dhul-Ḥijjah.” Ibn al-Qayyim commented on this by saying, “If the intelligent was to reflect over this answer, he would find it soothing and sufficing, for there are no days in which good deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days; and in them is the Day of ʿArafah (9th), the Day of Naḥr (slaughtering, 10th) and the Day of Tarwiyah (rest, 8th). As for the last ten nights of Ramaḍān, they are nights of staying up wherein the Prophet ﷺ would stay up entirely; and in them is a night better than a thousand months. So whoever answers without this detailed explanation will not be able to produce any sound argument.”
