ADOPTING A DOG FROM A POUND Whether to adopt a dog from a Pound? The questions I am asked about if a dog gets on with cats or Kids or Chickens or whatever...I simply cannot answer... A Pound dog comes with no history attached...they dont even have a name, there is a risk factor to all Pound and shelter dogs in these areas...as we simply do not know... We are pretty much guaranteed that they are dog and people friendly. What we ask people to consider is whether or not they are prepared to take on a poor creature who is most times sitting on death row. Yes they will probably have confidence issues, No they may not be house trained, and yes they will need your time and patience and courage to teach them that life is good and safe and caring. Most times these dogs are in the pound because they have been dumped by owners who can no longer afford or want them, they may have been lost and not chipped, or they can be failed working dogs. No I would not suggest taking on a German Shepherd to live with a snappy pet Chihuahua, we ask you to use your common sense and think with your head not only your heart. Do you have the time to be there to teach your dog, to realise the dogs needs, to offer a safe environment. What we ask is please please think, what back up plans do you have if the dog suddenly decides it wants to chase your cat, or you leave him to go to work and he wrecks the living room, because he is frightened he has been abandoned again. Simply giving a dog a few days and then wanting to give him back to us, is impossible for us to manage, we too are desperate for foster homes, and have no solutions at the drop of a hat. So we ask you with all sincerity, please consider all the scenarios, all the sleepless nights if the dog does not want to sleep alone, all the problems with next doors cat, the lead training and the poop on the best rug in the lounge. What you will be getting is a creature that in time will repay your kindness and patience with more love and affection and loyalty than you can ever imagine.
