ADVANCING IN THE MIDST OF ADVERSITY Word Emphasis Thou prepareth a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Ps 23:5 David was first a shepherd-boy before he became a king. He knew how fearful the sheep feels grazing in the environment of wild animals. Except the sheep trusts in the shepherd, the sheep is always afraid in the jungle. David describes the experience of the sheep in the jungle, the thick forest, as ‘the valley of the shadow of death.’ When the animals smell death around, or hear the roar of lion, for example, how would they not get frightened? But, if the shepherd has won the trust of the sheep under his care, the animals wouldn’t mind to have the best treat in the environment of the enemies. The picture David gives us shows that God is glorified when His children thrive despite the presence of their enemies. In the midst of your enemies, God wants you to shine to the running over. God wants your enemies to be around when He wants to crown you with success. Having no ability to hurt you, God enthrones you. Not that they wouldn’t try to hurt you, just that their weapon and effort will not prosper. Why? Because God is with you! Their curse can’t work on you because you have been highly blessed! Let’s read our opening scripture this way: ‘Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of those who are cursing me; and, despite all their curses and spells and incantations and attacks, my cup yet flows to the running over!’ ‘The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.’ (Ps. 110:2) When your knowledge, faith and strength is perfect in Christ, you will dare to shine amidst opposition, confrontation and adversity. This is the height of faith and will of God! CONFESSION Thou prepareth a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. I rule in the midst of my enemies. Amen! A LIFEGUIDE DEVOTIONAL by pastor Paul Olabanji
