ADVICE NEEDED! I will be teaching a Psych into class, starting January 22, for middle/ high school ages. (there are still 4 spots available if anybody wants to sign up- the class is in Warwick RI - Go to Rhodescholars-dot-com) ANYWAY.... here is the issue: I prioritize student investment and work to engage students. That said- lets face it, psych can be boring in the abstract. So, I have decided that I will assign each student a super-hero and a super-villain to apply their learning. My intention is to make it fun for them to apply different theories to what they know about their characters. What would Freud say about Peter Parker/ Spiderman? Was The Joker conditioned to be a bad- guy? That sort of thing. Just think how rich the material is with the conflicts between Supermans viewpoint and Batmans viewpoint -- that exemplifies most of the materials for discussing ethics! And then of course there is the Hulk!!! I want each student to have the same hero/ villain throughout the class as I think that will help them best compare/contrast different schools of thought. They will design observational research by focusing on their character in specific cartoons - which (I hope) makes them decide that homework is not so difficult after all. With all that said- I have TWO issues and would appreciate input. FIRST: I would like the students to pick their favorite character- but I am sure that we will have duplications which I dont want. Each student needs to have their own hero/ villain for purposes of class involvement. If the first Iron-Man hits it out of the park then there is really nothing left for the second Iron Man to contribute... not good for the 2nd Iron Man. However, if I just randomly assign, then I might end up with less enthusiasm -- after all- who wants to be Aqua Man (apologies to all the Aqua Man fans out there). I would let the kids select and over-ride a double--- but that puts me in an uncomfortable position of picking who gets it or not. SECOND: Wonder Woman is my only strong Female superhero. Yes I know we have Bat girl and Super-girl.... but really..... can you tell me their bio without thinking ,the way you could (assuming) Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent. Any feedback would be welcome!
