ADVICE TO NEW ADOPTERS FIRST DAY HOME Please remember guys you are still strangers to the pups so go easy on them. Doggy cave/corner/room/area always a good to get ready an area they they can feel safe and hide in. In there own time they will explore there new home. You can even use a cage but keep door open and cover with a towel or blanket. Let the doggies get used to you and your home in there own time. For the extra shy dogs - Every time you go past them, ignore them but drop a treat on the floor as you pass such as a timy bit of chicken. You will find oddly enough they will start to follow you and eventually come to you to be fussed for a treat ;O) Let your current dogs smell the new doggy, but not too much. make sure you are cradling the dog and controling the situation. FEEDING Please keep food plain and simple for the first few weeks. Good quality dry complete dog food is fine, goes without saying plenty of fresh water always near by. Cooked pasta and sardines/tuna - They love this , is easy to digest and gives a good nutrional boost. Rice and chicken, slowly boil he chicken first, then cook rice in the juices and fats. FOOD AGRESSION As with the majority of all shelter/rescue dogs there may be an element of food agression. Please dont be silly enough to go near there bowls or feed other dogs/cats nearby them until they realise that there will always be a supply of food for them. Keeping a bowl always topped up of dry dog food we have found has helped cure most food agressive dogs in a few days. ODD COLOURED POOHS ETC Because of the change in diet also getting used to the new home, you may find some green and odd looking stools made by your little angel. This is completely normal, but of this continues for a length of time obviously take doggy to the vet. Also keep in mind that every single dog 24 hours before would have had a strong internal dewormer, this can sometime bring on spotting of blood in the stools, again this is normal . Obviously if excessive then take to the vet. TOILET TRAINING Dont expect your dog to be house trained, even if he was in foster. This is a new home o him/her they need to relearn where they can go to the toilet. ODD SOUNDS ETC THAT SCARE THEM Many Rescued Rommies take a few days to get used to a television. This will pass when they get used to it all. LEAVING YOUR ANGELS ALONE OR TO HELP REDUCE SEPERATION ANXIETY AT NIGHT Leave a radio on, preferably a talk show on over night. This does help the doggy to feel not so alone and scared. Also remember how your current adorable pooch may act in front of you with the new one, may be completely different to when you are not there. FEAR TRIGGERS Please be aware that many of these doggies have been beaten at some point in their life. A mop a broom etc can be terrifying to these dogs. And though of course you guys wouldnt do this, but please please keep in mind that physical telling off should not be used on any dog, let alone these little guys. If you want to stop bad behaviour, get a spray bottle, fill with clean water and if for instance a dog is a barker, jist spray them... OUT AND ABOUT Please dont think your doggy is ready to be go off the lead just because they are followiing you on command etc in the garden. Go from short lead to extendable and work your way from there. Also investining in local doggie classes is a good way to train your pooch and is a great way to help them socialise with other doggies. HARNESS SAFEST BET Also, very very important...Though many of the your dogs will be fine on the lead, in the same measure many will not. Keep in mind the dog catchers weapon was a loop at the end of a pole. Many of these dogs would have been, or seen there mothers/siblings etc dragged by the necks etc, beaten and thrown in the back of a van, many would have been the last time they saw the ones they loved ever again...Please think about buying and using a harness. PASSPORT Use this like a health card, take to the vets each time and make sure booster vaccines etc are entered into the pasport. Via Aafa rescue group
