AERA HENDRA MANAGEMENT STRATEGY The AERA meeting held on the weekend discussed at length the Hendra situation. It was agreed to form a 4 person sub-committee to develop a Hendra Management Strategy for our Sport. The sub-committee has a September 30th deadline to provide a written report and recommendation(s). The AERA will review the report and recommendation(s) and shortly afterwards, the report and recommendation(s) will be disseminated to State Management Committees and State members for discussion. A vote to ratify or reject the sub-committee’s recommendation(s) will be conducted at the AERA November meeting. This will provide ample time for debate and discussion and for State members to advise their views to their State Management Committees. A summary of the key points in the Terms of Reference for the Sub-Committee requires them to: • Explore all possible options and alternatives to manage the risks associated with the Hendra virus. • Identify and document the concerns/issues associated with Hendra and to prepare factual responses to each concern/issue. State Members will be invited to submit their concerns/issues (a mechanism with contact details for this will be advised in a few days). • Liaise with third parties including but not limited to, the CSIRO, State DPI’s, Zoetis (vaccine manufacturer) and the Australian Veterinary Association to ensure that the responses to all concerns/issues are factually/scientifically based. The sub-committee comprises Chairman Tom Perkins (NSW), Mark Grogan (QLD), Liz Rutherford (WA) and a member of the AERA National Veterinary Panel yet to be advised. Until further notice, Hendra risk management strategies currently in place (or as adopted from time to time) by State Management Committees or ride organisers shall continue.
