AF Daily Devotional - Hidden Treasure An Amazing Fact: Pirates burying treasure was actually quite rare. The only pirate known to do so was William Kidd, who is believed to have buried some of his wealth on Long Island before traveling to New York. This cache of treasure has never been found. Every child dreams of finding a hidden treasure. Perhaps that’s why so many kid’s TV shows, magazines, and even breakfast cereals talk about hidden treasures. There is something tantalizing about the picture of an old wooden chest spilling over with gold and jewels. Most buried treasure stories in history depict a lone pirate who survives a battle in which all his partners in crime are killed. He somehow preserves a map showing where the hidden treasure can be found. Often, he cannot return to claim the chest of gold and so, while on his deathbed, he passes the information to a friend. This person then tries in vain to find the riches and so must also pass along the secret chart. And so it continues … It is the persistence and effort of treasure hunters that Solomon draws to our attention. Wisdom is “more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her” (Proverbs 3:15). In our search for wisdom, we cannot expect it to fall into our laps. We must earnestly hunt for the secret source and do all we can to obtain it. Jesus uses the same idea when describing the kingdom of heaven: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field” (Matthew 13:44). God seeks to reward the diligent person who pursues heaven’s wisdom. It begins by searching your Bible. In the Book of books, we find Jesus—who reveals to us a true picture of God. Paul explains that in Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). While many fables have been written about finding buried treasure, there is a genuine experience we may have when seeking for heavenly wisdom. God promises to reward the earnest at heart. When we are passionate about finding a deeper knowledge of God, we will not reluctantly pass along useless maps. Our dreams will come true. We will find heaven’s greatest treasure. Dear Jesus, I want to seek for you with more passion than I would for hidden treasure. Please reward my earnest efforts to find you as I study Your Word.
