In these concluding words of Metamorphoses by the Roman poet Ovid, he does not understate his work. Humility may not have been Ovids greatest strength (authoring fifteen volumes of epic poetry DOES earn you some bragging rights...) but his final words proved to be true. The myths of Metamorphoses have become the most well-known in the Western world, influencing the likes of Shakespeare, Chaucer, Dante and English composer Benjamin Britten. Composed in 1951, Brittens Six Metamorphoses after Ovid is an interesting piece of music inspired by literature. It is the only time that Britten composed for unaccompanied oboe (he gifted the piece to oboist Joy Boughton) and it is surprisingly short. Each movement is named after a prominent character from Ovids myths: Pan, Phaeton, Niobe, Bacchus, Narcissus, and Arethusa. The oboe takes on the personalities of each character in a series of solos that show off the full range of the oboe, open to the soloists interpretation with a slightly improvised feel. The piece is refreshing and may be surprising to many unfamiliar with the oboes sound.
