AFANDE PAJERO PART II Afande returned with another 2003 - TopicsExpress

AFANDE PAJERO PART II Afande returned with another 2003 military Pajero which also has transmission zibs!! It runs in fail safe mode (only 3rd gear) but unusually, will allow to slip into 2nd gear when the tiptronic gear lever is actuated. Hmmm! A chat with the TCM revealed: 22: Input speed sensor. 21: Crankshaft speed sensor 51: Serial communications interface (SCI) fail 12: Throttle position sensor open. Now, 12, 21 and 51 have a common denominator - communication with the ECM. Could the TCM have been upset by lack of signals from the ECM when the communication lines were interrupted by the garage from which Afande arrived? After the incident with his first Pajero, I believed this was likely so I stored the codes on the hard drive and erased them from the TCM. I headed out for a test drive. Initially the car drove so well upshifting and downshifting correctly. However, once cruising in 4th gear and then requiring to decelerate, the gremlins returned. Worse still, during 2nd to 3rd gear changes, the revs went up for a second or two, 3rd gear clunked in and the car lurched a bit. Hmmm. I returned to the garage and questioned the TCM again. There was just a solitary code: 22: Input speed sensor. Oh, really? How come the data from this sensor appeared to be good? After the test drive, I was convinced this was a mechanical problem. Either the bands or clutches are slipping and the gear ratios computed by the TCM after reading both the input and output speed sensors differ from what it is expecting. Please view our description of how transmissions are electronically controlled here: https://youtube/watch?v=yLBBQk-qV4o The algorithms for some reason think the input speed sensor is faulty (probably because the speedometer readings match ABS data). I did suspect valves/solenoids but discounted them because the gear changes immediately after code erasure were normal. It is when 4th gear is involved that the gremlins return - probably because a certain set of clutches or bands has been disturbed.
