AFC Wallasey Town v FC Victoria , Capital Cup , 28/9/14 AFC Wallasey Town hosted FC Victoria at Central Park in a bid to progress into the second round of The Capital Cup. Unbeaten in the division above, it was never going to be an easy task trying to eliminate the visitors. Wallasey nearly got off to the best possible start though when after just 2 minutes Adam Hanaghan won a tackle on the halfway line and found some space ahead of him. With the ball sat up nicely he fired a 35 yard lofted shot that the keeper didnt get near, it bounced off the inside of the right hand top corner of the posts and landed just the wrong side of the line. Dream start and goal of the season denied! The game was very even with both sides playing some lovely football. After a series of corners Wallasey defended a goalmouth scramble and hit Victoria with a quick counter attack. Lee Davey tried a audacious chip to the far post but it went just wide. Back at the other end Jay OConner made a smart save but could only parry the ball to the edge of the six yard box where a great tackle from Neil Sergent stopped a certain goal. Wallasey returned the favour by going back up the other end and a Hanaghan throughball found Ben Speed who just missed the target with his angled drive. Then Speed was the provider, teeing up Davey but his effort fizzed past the far post again. HT 0-0 but an exciting game with supporters agreeing this was the game of the season so far and the first goal would be crucial. The second half continued in the same manner but without the same amount of clear cut chances. With 25 minutes left though, Tom Freeman burst down the line and sent a powerful low cross into the goalmouth, Adam Hanaghan was perfectly placed and latched onto the end of it, sending the ball into the back of the net with a neat finish. 1-0 Town !!! With the deadlock broken Wallasey were then hit with an injury. Neil Sergent twisted his knee and required some attention..after mineral water didnt magically untwist his knee, it was decided hed have to come off. Wallasey re-shaped with Pip Armstrong coming on and several players switching positions, but they were rocked by the change and didnt settle quickly. Victoria spied their chance and from a break on the right hand side the dangerous cross was deflected into the net...by Pip....and the game was all square at 1-1. Wallasey though did then settle and all eleven players clicked back into gear as they searched for the winner. What could have been a real heads-down moment instead inspired Town and they surged forward. Ben Speed collected a ball inside the area and made a smart turn to make room for the shot, but the turn was too quick for the defender who pulled him down for a penalty. Up stepped Lee Davey. 2-1! The spirit of the Wallasey lads was now unbreakable. Every Victoria attack was turned away and every player was supporting each other and covering gaps where needed, it was a real team performance. Then with just a couple of minutes remaining the always impressive Mark Cullimore played a trademark long pass to Speed who controlled it perfectly, lifted it over the defenders head and then calmly slotted it past the keeper. Brilliant goal, and one he totally deserved. 3-1 game over. The best team performance so far and a great win to put us through to the next round. It must also be said that FC Victoria are the nicest bunch of lads weve played too, the game was played in the right spirit for 90 minutes and they all wished us good luck in the next round after the match. Top class. Now THAT is football. After the game your match reporter went to visit Jim Seale, possibly Towns biggest supporter, who youll remember had a serious operation a few days ago. His first question was what was the score? and Ward 8a of Liverpool Royal all found out wed won as he shouted F******G Get In There!!! whilst punching the air! Fingers crossed hell be on the touchline for next weeks league game v Olympic at Lingham. Well in boys. tell me ma, me ma... Forza Wallasey !!
