AFI Names Best Movies of 2014 It’s that time of year again! As we get close to wrapping up 2014, the theaters suddenly get swamped with possible Oscar contenders and lists of the top 10 films of the year begin to be revealed, but today things are getting super-sized. For the first time in its history, the American Film Institute has named 11 movies for their annual Best of list instead of the usual 10. The list, which is revealed in alphabetical order, consists mostly of films that were released within the past couple months and some that have yet to hit theaters starting with Clint Eastwood’s upcoming war drama, American Sniper, starring Bradley Cooper as real-life NAVY SEAL Chris Kyle. American Sniper is set to get a limited release this Christmas in order to be eligible for Oscar consideration before opening wide on January 16th. American Sniper wasn’t the only film based on a true story to make the list. Foxcatcher starring Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, about Olympic Wrestlers the Schultz brothers who get mixed up with an unstable multi-millionaire sponsor was also included as was The Imitation Game starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, the real life English mathematician who cracked Germany’s Enigma code during World War II and helped stop the war. Other true life tells to be named the best of the year include Selma, about Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights marches in Selma, Alabama and the upcoming Angelina Jolie directed Unbroken, about Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who is taken prisoner by Japanese forces during World War II. Of course, it wasn’t all about true stories as the Michael Keaton starrer Birdman, which has received wide acclaim, particularly for Keaton’s portrayal of a former on-screen superhero trying to make a comeback was also included as was director Richard Linklater’s ambitious Boyhood, which took 12 years to film and stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette. The Jake Gyllenhaal starring Nightcrawler about an L.A. crime journalist also made the list as did Whiplash, starring Miles Teller as a drummer enrolled in a cutthroat music conservatory. The lone blockbuster on the list was Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which has so far brought in over $600 million worldwide. Rounding out the list was the upcoming musical Into the Woods which features and all-star cast that includes Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine and Anna Kendrick.
