AFRICA STATISTICS DAY The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics - TopicsExpress

AFRICA STATISTICS DAY The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) will soon be reformed to enhance the quality of data it provides to users. Modern electronic technology will be used as part of the envisaged radical reforms that are geared to empower county governments to collect and analyze their own data for development purposes. Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru announced today that her ministry was working with KNBS to amend the Statistic Act 2006 to address the needs of the data users and ensure that the new law was in tandem with the provisions of the new constitution. She said the review of the act was meant to factor the Devolution aspect in data collection under the schedule four of the constitution on the formation of a National Strategy for Development of Statistics. The reforms, she added, will provide a framework within which the gathering and breakdown of official statistics will be made compliant with devolution. Waiguru was speaking today at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre’s COMESA grounds where she presided over this year’s Africa Statistics Day celebrations. She also unveiled the ISO 9001: 2008 certification which KNBS recently attained to become the first data processing entity to have ever acquired the approval in the continent. She said the theme of this year’s celebrations “Quality Data to Support African Progress” illustrates the resilience of the Continent to sustain steady growth despite prevailing global economic crisis.
