AFRIKAN WOMBMEN NOT GETTING ENOUGH CREDIT Afrika boasts of female military leaders like Zimbabwes Nehanda and Angolas Nzingha, to name but a few, who engaged Europan imperialists in combat against land dispossession. For some strange reason, male historians, when commenting on the great Shaka, tend to refer to him as Shaka ka Senzangakhona, the very Senzangakhona who gave Shaka a hard time. The truth is, the Zulu king was Shaka kaNandi, the woman who raised, prepared and encouraged Shaka to be ready for the day he would take up his palce as the king of the Zulus. It is not insignificant that Emperor Shaka The Greats author, Mazisi Kunene, notes that with the departure of Nandi, the king-maker, to the world ynder, Shaka also lost the will to live, because that woman was one of his Chief Advisrs. His fathers sister, Mkhabayi, against Senzangakhonas choice made sure that Shaka became king. She had more insight into politics than her brother had. It is of no less importance to note as well that it was Mkhabayi who was the chief plotter in dethroning Shaka, while Dingane and Mbopha - his brothers - lacked the courage to face Shaka, thus proving the significant role played by women in politics. But for some reason, history, which is chiefly in the hands of males, does not not accord the deserved attention to these African women leaders. - Dr Simphiwe Sesanti
