AFT (SP) 4449 races compass north (railroad east) on SPs Mulford Line at the station site of Agnew, in Santa Vlara CA. The date is April 27, 1977 and the now famous Northern is on the final leg of her trip back to Portland after touring much of the west and southwest (and even parts of the South) with the American Freedom Train. To help finance the trip home a train of Amtrak cars were put together and a series of one-day trips sold for the entire westbound journey. On this date, little did any of us know in a mere 5 years, SP 4449 would return to California painted in her original Daylight colors of orange and red. (© Ken Rattenne, all rights reserved)
