AFTER THE FLOOD (Partlands at Kinmount) If just listening to the Partland Brothers sing “Soul City” still lifts your spirits, you have one more reason to come out to the After The Flood benefit concert in Kinmount on Civic Holiday Saturday night. The Partlands, Chris and G.P., are the latest addition to the Aug. 3 fund-raising concert at the Kinmount Fairgrounds. They and Cuff The Duke will be opening acts for the headliners, Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor. Chris and G.P. will be joined by Brent Bailey, longtime keyboard player for Canadian music legend Ronnie Hawkins. The Partlands have also played frequently with Hawkins. Proceeds from the Aug. 3 concert will go to the Township of Minden Hills Flood Relief Fund. “Soul City,” described as “a soaring anthem featuring the brothers’ distinctive close-harmony vocals” made the Top 10 in Canada and the Top 30 in the United States in 1986. Their other early hit was “One Chance” in 1987, when they won a Juno as Canada’s most promising group. Management problems bogged them down after that. In the 1990s, they shifted to a more acoustic rock and roll sound. In 2010, the record label EMI released a compilation of their work. The concert is part of a volunteer effort to raise more than $1.3-million to assist owners of principal residences and businesses affected by an overflow of the Gull River that kept much of Minden village under water for more than three weeks in late April and early May. That effort has already raised more than half a million dollars. Uninsured damage to qualifying homes and businesses is estimated at more than $4-million. The province has said it will contribute up to two dollars for every dollar raised locally. Addition of the Partlands to the Aug. 3 concert bill was announced as ticket sales for the event topped 900.
