AGM: a match report. Before I undergo the onerous task of writing up the minutes, I thought that Id introduce the new committee in the only way that I know how. PRESIDENT In a battle of the straw-weights of the tennis club, gnarled club stalwart Cameron Mack went tete a tete with young upstart Scott Barclay. Cam is like an old pair of jeans: not immediately attractive, but a comfy fit. Scott is like a skittish puppy: enthusiastic, lovable and occasionally wets/soils himself when excited. It was always going to be a tight one with Cams credentials being getting the 2nd team relegated to tier 4 of BUCS and Scotts being not having any experience in any position of power, including in his own relationship. In probably the closest vote of the evening, Cam triumphed. Cam Mack is President. VICE PRESIDENT I ran against club socialite Stuart Kelly. My campaign was of course based on statistics and straight talking. Stuart adopted the sentimental approach, in possibly the greatest speech witnessed in AUTC history (I love this club, everyone at it, and my mum). Unfortunately for Stuart, the club seems to be composed of psychopaths. A 2nd era of Ainsley was ushered in. I am Vice President. TREASURER The first 3 horse race of the evening saw an undeterred Stuart battle Cammy Nicol and Cameron Adam. After a bout of mathematical and financial oneupmanship between the 2 Cams, and an emotional rehash of the VP speech from Stuart, it was Cammys passionate criticism of the tardiness of repayment, past and present, that swung the vote in his favour. Cammy Nicol is Treasurer. TEAM CAPTAINS In a slight change to the role, the 1st team captain for each of the mens and womens squad will have overall authority on team matters, as well as their own teams, with the other captains responsible for their own teams. There was no opposition to any position, so the captains are as follows. Rickard Strand, Douglas Black and Jonathan Huntley are mens 1st, 2nd and 3rd team captains respectively. Jennifer Warnock and Soph Dickson are womens 1st and 2nd team captains respectively. PR MANAGER This new role was contested by Jules Katharina and Stuart. Jules reeled off an impressive CV, mentioning a Swiss company. Stuart, unabashed, cited his PR own work for an Alzheimers charity, amongst other projects. Jules is a force of nature though and, in case her obvious prowess wasnt enough, had threatened before the meeting to shank anyone not voting for her. I love her competitive spirit. Julia Klein is PR Manager. SOCIAL SECRETARIES It was decreed by vote that there would be a male social secretary and a female one. This was great news for Stuart, who had run out of speeches, as he was elected unopposed. The battle for the female position was intense though. Pia Boehm, Tasha Eastwood, Jenna Katrina Gallacher and Emma Winton all made strong cases for selection. Jennas empathy with new members needing to feel part of the group from the outset and the promise of creative ideas for socials seemed to resonate with the congregation, as she squeaked through. Stuart Kelly and Jenna Gallacher are social secretaries. Congratulations to the new committee members and commiserations to those who missed out. It is especially encouraging to see so much new blood this year: Rickard, Douglas, Jonathan, Jenni, Soph, Jules and Jenna are all well deserving of their positions. The club will enter a handover period until the end of the semester, so youre not shot of the old guard yet! If in doubt, Josh Thomas is still the man, and Im on hand if hes busy. Good luck to the new crew. Ill leave you with a quote from American comedian Fred Allen: A committee is a group of the unprepared, appointed by the unwilling to do the unnecessary.
