AHOM---AXOM---SUKAFA---AXOMIYA. THE TAIS are a huge tribe having its people distributed in different parts of SOUTH -EAST ASIA. Our AHOM brothers are a branch of this huge tribe .The TAIS are known as SHANS in BURMA ,as TAI in THAILAND ,as LAO in LAOS ,as DAIS and JUANG-AANG in CHINA AND TE-THAI in VIETNAM. The branch which came into the BRAHMAPUTRA valley was known as AHOM. It is not yet confirmed which branch of the TAI people came into the BRAHMAPUTRA VALLEY and so it is not confirmed how the name AHOM came. According to Dr, SUNITI KUMAR CHATTERJEE, the name AHOM is a BURMESE tribal name. HISTORIANS CLAIM that TAI-SHAN people lived in CHINA and to the north of MONGOLIA. From there they came to YUNAN province and established their own kingdom at MOONGRI-MOONGRAM. The BURMESE PEOPLE who came in contact with the SHAN people in the 11th century, called them as RHWAM, in their MON SCRIPT .This RHWAM in the course of time changed like=RHWAM—YAWHAM—AHWAM—AHOM. The name RHWAM name given by the BURMESE by change of pronounciation became AHOM. Many wants to claim that ashyan—asan—assam—axom. Some think that AXOM came from the BODO word HA-SHAN. THOUGH THERE ARE SEVERAL EXPLATIONS, THE EXPLATION GIVEN BY Dr. S.K. CHATTERJEE is more acceptable. Six groups of TAI people entered ASSAM AND THEY ARE---1) TAI-TURUNG ,2 ) TAI-SHYAM, 3) TAI-AITON, 4) TAI-KHAMPTI, 5 ) TAI-PHAKE ,6) TAI-AHOM. Of these the KHAMTI and PHAKES came later .Though they have their own mother tongue, they treat ASSAMESE AS EQUIVALENT TO THEIR MOTHER TONGUE. The word AXOM and AXOMMIYA has come from the word AHOM .If the AHOMS did not come here, the name of the country would have not been AXOM, and the name of the people ,language and culture would have not been AXOMIYA. When the AHOMS entered ASSAM, at that time from SADIYA to COOCHBEHAR, there were many big and small kingdoms of the KOCH ,KACHARI , CHUTIYA, BARO-BHUYAN. The AHOMS conquered all of these and brought them under one roof called the BOR-AXOM and formed the great AXOMIYA JATI. When we talk about the AHOM, we must talk about the great SUKAFA. The TAI-SHAN people originally from CHINA and NORTH-MONGOLIA, came to YUNAN and there established their kingdom of MOONGRI-MOONGRAM, which is the original country of the TAI people who came to ASSAM as THE AHOMS. While in MOONGRI-MOONGRAM, they occupied SUKAM and established many other small kingdoms. Later on MOONGRI-MOONGRAM was divided and another kingdom came up named MAOLUNG, which included BURMA. SUKAFA was a prince of this MAOLUNG kingdom .But when his elder brother ascended the throne of MAOLUNG, SUKAFA was disheartened and so he left MAOLUNG in 1215 A, D. along with eight officers ,nine thousand soldiers ,two elephants, three hundred horses, bows and arrows, HENGDANS (SWORDS ). For 13 years, he fought with different tribal people scattered along the PATKAI hills. He then crossed the KHAMLANG river and was strongly resisted by the NAGAS. SUKAFA OVERCAME THIS RESISTENCE and it is said that he tortured and gave severe punishments to the NAGAS. In 1228, he crossed the PATKAI hills and came down to the valley. He reached BUHRI-DIHING river via NAMRUP and then conquered all the NAGA and other tribes and brought them under him. Then he arrived at TIPAM and then at ABHOYUR, HABOONG, SIMOLIGURI, and then established his first capital at CHARAIDEO. The area occupied by SUKAFA was originally by the MORAN,BORAHI ,CHUTIYA AND KACHARIS. But these people had no kings and they were under their leaders. So, it was easy for SUKAFA to conquer them. When SUKAFA first entered the valley, he saw the rich paddy fields of the plain and called the place as MUNG-DUN-SOON-KHAM, or the land of gold. After establishing the kingdom SUKAFA invited all the leaders of the different tribes and made friendship with them. As the AHOMS, left their women folk in MAOLUNG, so they established marriage relation with these tribes and thereby started the formation of the united great AXOMIYA JATI. SUKAFA HIMSELF MARRIED 4 PRINCESS from BORAHI and MORAN tribes. During the rule of SUKAFA, THE BOUNDARY OF THE AHOM kingdom was extended up to the NAMDANG river. As the number of the subjects were much more and the local people did not understand or could speak, the use of the AHOM language came down .As the local girls marrying the AHOM husbands had to use the local language, the use of AHOM language became limited and reduced only for use only in religious functions. The priest class like the DEODHAIS, MOHONS , BAILOONGS only kept the AHOM language alive. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
