AID/WATCH Today is the day that AusAID ceases to exist as an independent agency, just over six weeks after Tony Abbott ordered it to be merged with DFAT. Hundreds of Canberra-based AusAID public servants are still in the dark about their future. Little has been reported about projects and programs that are likely to be adversely affected overseas and the stress on those individuals and organisations. What is telling about this process is that transparency is not even remotely on the governments agenda. They also appear keen on maintaining the exclusion of women with an all male, 5-person steering committee overseeing the merge. Well done to Tanya Plibersek for standing up for family planning services. We certainly never celebrated the aid program under the Labor government, with far too many programs promoting commercial interests under a thin veil of development, but things are definitely set to get much, much worse.
