AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) today praised Congressman Charles B. Rangel (D, NY, 13th District) for his bipartisan initiative in choosing to sign on as a cosponsor of the Ryan White Patient and Equity Choice Act (H.R. 4260), a bill that was introduced with bipartisan support in Congress in mid-March and would reprioritize the Ryan White CARE Act, the nation’s premier AIDS program that has been the principal source of funding for AIDS care and services in the US since 1990, to better address the current epidemic. The new bill was authored and sponsored by Renee Ellmers, (R, NC, 2nd District). In signing on as a cosponsor, Rangel joins fellow progressive cosponsors Eddie Bernice-Johnson (D, TX, 30th District); Bennie Thompson, (D, MS, 2nd District); and David McKinley (R, WV, 1st District) in supporting sustained public access to HIV treatment with an emphasis on where the need is highest. AHF has publicly backed the bill since its introduction, and supported a grassroots advocacy effort in the spring that has resulted in over 100 groups including HIV/AIDS medical providers, social service organizations, municipalities and local representatives as well as community churches, have signed on to a letter to the United States House of Representatives’ Committee on Energy & Commerce urging Congress to swiftly pass the bill. “We heartily thank Congressman Rangel for joining the growing wave of support for this landmark health initiative, both within Congress and in communities nationwide,” said Michael Rangel cosponsors Ryan White bill, joins Ellmers in supporting lifesaving US AIDS program Weinstein, President of AHF. “His voice adds to the growing consensus that controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the US is still a high priority, and it shows Congress is hearing and responding to the real-life needs of their constituents.
