AIHA partners from the Zambia Defense Forces (ZDF) will visit the Global Partnership for Telehealth (GPT) Training Center in Atlanta, Georgia, for a telemedicine practicum exchange October 25-November 8. This study tour is being organized through AIHA’s Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)-supported Knowledge Management Program with funding from the United States Department of Defense (DOD). ZDF’s Telemedicine Core Technical Team will engage in advanced, hands-on telemedicine exercises at GPT headquarters and participate in site visits to area hospitals, school clinics, skilled nursing facilities, and specialty care facilities, including HIV treatment centers. A special focus will be on providing hands-on learning opportunities related to an array of telemedicine technologies that can greatly improve both access to, and quality of, healthcare services resource-constrained settings. With DOD support, AIHA has been working with ZDF Medical Services to develop a locally-driven, locally-owned telemedicine program within the Zambian military’s integrated health system as a way to increase equity of access to quality specialized treatment services, particular treatment and care for HIV/AIDS, related opportunistic, and other infectious diseases. AIHA has been instrumental in supporting ZDF with the acquisition of appropriate technologies for a successful telemedicine program.
