AILA is organizing pro bono volunteers to provide legal representation. The women and their families are at various stages of the expedited removal process, some having not been given their Credible Fear Interviews, some having passed their interviews but are not being informed that they are eligible for bonds, many more have been found to not have “credible” fear, others await an appeal with an Immigration Judge, and others are simply awaiting their deportation. Many migrant families have not been adequately assessed in their CFIs and need strong advocacy to help protect their due process rights. AILA has created an information guide for individuals traveling to Artesia, New Mexico, to help in the Central American humanitarian crisis. This document includes general information about the ICE detention facility in Artesia, flight costs, accommodations, and temporary office space. Also, AILA has compiled advocacy resources here. As a volunteer attorney, you do not have to be members of AILA, you must know immigration law, and it is preferable that you speak Spanish. If you are interested in assisting with pro bono representation for the families currently in Artesia, please contact Anu Joshi or Susan Timmons from AILA by emailing [email protected]. They will match attorneys with those families who have requested to speak with one.
